When Grimshaw died in 2012 he left the island to the national park, along with strict instructions that it must remain a national park and that no hotels may be built on the island. Moyenne, as the name suggests, is the middle island. It lies between St. Anne, Round and Long island, in the St. Anne Marine National Park.
Seychelles is a country made up of an archipelago of 115 islands off the west coast of Africa. Known for its gorgeous waters and rich tree-covered islands, it has become a popular tourist destination in recent decades. But one small island called Moyenne remains an oasis within paradise.
With tourism starting to take off in the Seychelles, it seemed only a matter of time before someone cleared the land to build a five-star resort. Moyenne is one of the smallest of the Seychelles' inner islands: it measures just 0.4km long and barely 0.3km wide, and its coastline runs for less than 2km.
It is now safely regulated as the smallest national park in the world, and also holds the distinction of having more species per square foot than any other national park in existence. Grimshaw chronicled both his life as an adventuring editor and his transformation of Moyenne in the book Grain of Sand.
