    Between late 2019 and May 2022, over 360 newspapers closed, while since 2005, the nation has lost over a quarter of its local publications. That trend is expected to continue, and by 2025, researchers predict the US will lose one third of its local newspapers.
    Local newspapers are shutting down at an average rate of two per week throughout the United States, leaving large swaths of the country in news deserts. Previous research has shown that when local news shutters, participation in democracy declines, and local officials are free to operate without the press holding them accountable.
    More than 130 papers have closed or merged this year, and the country is on track to lose a third of its papers since 2005 by the end of next year, the report found. Over half of counties in the United States have just one or no local news outlets.
