Leaving children unattended in locked cars. It only takes a few minutes for the interior of a car or truck to heat up to deadly temperatures, even on warm days. Sadly, 13 children have died so far in 2025 across the US due to heatstroke after being left unattended in a vehicle, according to data from No Heat Stroke.
Two people in South Texas are facing charges in connection with the deaths of two children who were left in unattended vehicles in separate incidents over the weekend.
About 80% of the heat rise in vehicles happens in the first 30 minutes of a child being left inside, when maximum temperatures can exceed 150 degrees Fahrenheit (65 degrees Celsius), according to data compiled by Jan Null, a certified consulting meteorologist at San Jose State University.
