HONG KONG — For decades, tens of thousands would come to Hong Kong’s Victoria Park every June 4 to raise a candle in somber commemoration for those killed by the Chinese military as it crushed the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests.

Hong Kong boosted security around a park Sunday where tens of thousands of people used to gather for an annual memorial of the bloody Tiananmen Square crackdown, ensuring no protests on the event's 34th anniversary.

With candlelight vigils to the victims of the 1989 crushed student uprising in Beijing now only a memory, the anniversary is also a reminder of the freedoms Hong Kong has lost.

Many Hong Kongers are trying to mark the event in private ways because it is unclear what authorities might consider subversive.
