The United Nations General Assembly will vote on Thursday on a draft resolution that demands an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in the war in Gaza after the United States vetoed a similar effort in the Security Council last week.
The UN General Assembly adopted a draft resolution Thursday calling on member states to take all measures necessary to ensure Israel's compliance with international law. The resolution, which also highlights the dire humanitarian situation in Palestine, noted the need for accountability to ensure that Israel respects international law obligations.
For the first time since the Israeli military operation started in Gaza after Oct. 7, 2023, this new draft text of the General Assembly includes strong language about Israel’s role as the occupying power in Gaza. It stresses, for example, “the need for accountability in order to ensure Israel’s respect of international law obligations.”
The United Nations chief is urging world leaders and officials attending an upcoming U.N. conference on ending the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict “to keep the two-state solution alive.”
