NASA will train an Indian astronaut for a voyage to the International Space Station as early as next year, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said on Wednesday, amid deepening space ties between India and the United States.

Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma journeyed aboard the Soviet rocket Soyuz T-11 in 1984 to space to become a national hero and an emblem of India's space aspirations.

Four Indian astronauts would be trained for an India-US joint space mission and one of them would travel to the International Space Station next year, Isro chairman S Somanath said on Wednesday, adding: "All four will get overseas training and two shortlisted astronauts will undergo training at Nasa.

During his visit to India, NASA Chief Bill Nelson revealed that both India and the US are planning to send an astronaut to the International Space Station by the end of 2024
