More than a dozen states and the District of Columbia have filed lawsuits against TikTok on Tuesday, alleging the popular short-form video app is harming youth mental health by designing its platform

A bipartisan coalition of attorneys general from New York and 12 other states are suing TikTok for allegedly harming young people’s mental health, while misleading the public about the safety of its popular social media platform.

More than half of American teens aged 13 to 17 use TikTok, the short-form video social media app owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company.

Fourteen states have just filed lawsuits against TikTok that claim the social media platform damages the mental health of young users and collects their data without consent. Each lawsuit was filed individually.

More than a dozen states are filing lawsuits Tuesday accusing TikTok of harming the well-being of children by using addictive product features that keep them hooked on the platform, in a bipartisan salvo that amplifies the company’s legal perils as it tries to stave off a federal ban.

TikTok intentionally designed its platform to "override a young person's agency," Attorney General Andrea Campbell alleged in a new lawsuit.
