Republican demands for boosted border security have thrown a major wrench in a much-needed aid package to help Ukraine

The Senate voted to block a bill Wednesday that would have provided aid to Ukraine as Republicans have clamored for stricter border security measures.

Republicans are doubling down on their efforts to exact border policy changes in exchange for their support for Ukraine aid.

An emergency spending bill to provide billions of dollars in new security assistance for Ukraine and Israel was blocked in the U.S. Senate on Wednesday as Republicans pressed their demands for tougher measures to control immigration at the U.

The vote, a 49-51 tally that fell short of the Senate’s 60-vote threshold for moving ahead, came just hours after Biden said it was “stunning” that Congress has not yet approved tens of billions of dollars in military and economic assistance for Ukraine.
