California's top insurance regulator is launching a probe into State Farm over its handling of claims from Los Angeles-area wildfires that broke out in January.

As California heads into peak wildfire season, Governor Gavin Newsom announced a new effort to recruit firefighters and emergency personnel for Cal Fire, one of the world’s largest firefighting departments.

Firefighters made progress battling a wind-driven brush fire burning in steep, rugged terrain south of Apple Valley overnight. The Ranch fire, which has burned through 4,205 acres of vegetation, is now 10% contained, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection announced Wednesday morning.

Letter Fire initially started 10:04 p.m. June 8 in Plumas County. Since its discovery four days ago, it has burned 11.1 acres. By Thursday morning, 50% of this wildfire was brought under containment. The cause is, however, still being investigated.

Starting this weekend, several hiking areas are set to be closed indefinitely in Riverside County due to fire risk.

The fire, which was burning near the town of Apple Valley, had exploded to over 4,200 acres since starting on Tuesday afternoon.
