NEW YORK -- The world's most expensive diamond and ruby have been sold in the same auction -- a first in auction history. The Magnificent Jewels auction also made history for becoming the first to sell two stones for more than $30 million in the same sale. The 55.22-carat “Estrela de FURA,” the world’s largest ruby, sold to an unnamed private collector from the Middle East.

Sotheby’s New York set two world records for gemstones today, for a ruby and a pink diamond, fetching identical prices of $34.8 million each.

A 10.57 carat pink diamond, dubbed The Eternal Pink, also achieved $34.8 million at auction on Thursday, establishing a world auction record for a “fancy purplish-pink diamond”. Sotheby’s has described it as the “most vivid pink diamond to ever come to market”.
