The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency did not anticipate its moon lander, SLIM, to survive 1 weekslong lunar night on the moon and it has now lasted 3 after reaching the moon's surface on Jan. 20.

Japan's SLIM lunar lander has now survived three week-long nights on the moon, braving temperatures as low as minus 274 degrees Fahrenheit, despite not being designed to last one!

Japan had its moment in the Moon’s glow earlier this year when scientists landed a lunar probe on the surface of our nearest celestial neighbor. The landing didn’t quite go to plan, though, as the probe landed face-first.
