Japan’s lander that nose-dived on moon survives 2nd lethal lunar night
Since its launch last September, SLIM embarked on a remarkable journey, culminating in a historic landing on January 19. This put Japan on the list of spacefaring nations that have successfully achieved a soft landing on the Moon, which is extremely difficult to do.
Still alive! Japan's SLIM moon lander survives its 2nd lunar night (photo)
SLIM, whose name is short for "Smart Lander for Investigating Moon," launched last September and landed on Jan. 19, making Japan just the fifth nation to pull off a soft lunar touchdown. (The other four are the Soviet Union, the United States, China and India.)
Against All Odds, Japan’s Toppled Moon Lander Is Still Alive
Tech Miracle In the wake of NASA's failed private Moon lander debacle, Japan's version is, somehow, alive and kicking. In a post on X-formerly-Twitter, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) confirmed that SLIM,
Japan's SLIM Moon Lander Just Won't Die
SLIM, short for Smart Lander for Investigating Moon, landed on the Moon on January 19, making Japan the fifth country to successfully put a spacecraft on the dusty lunar surface. About three hours after landing, however, JAXA was forced to shut down the spacecraft’s system because SLIM’s solar cells were not generating enough electricity.
JAXA SLIM moon lander survives second lunar night
Japan space officials said on Thursday its Smart Lander for Investigating Moon spacecraft has survived a second lunar night and has received photos from it.
Japan’s SLIM moon lander surprisingly survived a second lunar night
The Smart Lander for Investigating Moon spacecraft has sent back images after surviving its second lunar night – generally these periods are so cold they destroy spacecraft electronics
Japan’s SLIM moon lander survives another lunar night against all odds
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) on Thursday confirmed that its SLIM Moon lander survived two lunar nights without its instruments freezing. The Smart Lander for Investigating Moon launched in September last year and landed on the Moon on January 19. It was able to do something that ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 could not — not once but twice.
Japan attempts to revive moon lander after second lunar night
Japan's space agency said on Tuesday it will try to revive its moon lander after a second frigid, two-week lunar night, following a surprising awakening last month.
Japan's Moon Lander Does It Again, Survives Another Unforgiving Lunar Night
It encountered an issue during descent and landed nose down with an awkward orientation that deprived its solar panels of sunlight. The mission controllers at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) waited for the solar angle to change so SLIM's battery could be charged it can carry on with its experiments.
Japan’s SLIM moon lander survives a second brutal lunar night
SLIM, Japan’s first successful lunar lander, isn’t going down without a fight. After making history—albeit upside down —in January, the Smart Lander for Investigating Moon continues to surprise mission control at Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) by surviving not one, but now two brutally frigid lunar nights.
Japan moon probe survives second lunar night
Japan's moon lander woke up after unexpectedly surviving a second frigid, two-week lunar night and transmitted new images back to Earth, the country's space agency said Thursday.
